This course will introduce students to fundamentals of rule based phonology, and also provide empirical and philosophical arguments in support of derivational phonology and against constraint-based markedness approaches.
Topics will include the nature of phonological representations, the relationship between phonetics and phonology, the logical necessity of innate categories, formal properties of the phonological computational system, competence and performance in phonological acquisition, choosing between extensionally equivalent grammatical descriptions.
