Olomouc06 FAQ

1. FINAL INFO ABOUT ARRIVAL AND ACCOMODATION

1.1. Change of the address
Contrary to what we had said, the address of the dorm is KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8. Follow the corrected instructions in the section 2.7. below. The building is the tallest one in the complex, it consists of two tall towers with a connection section in the middle. The entrance is in the middle. We will try to put the signs "EGG 2006" on the way from the tram stops.

1.2. REGISTRATION
In the entrance section of the hostel (koleje Bedricha Vaclavka, Smeralova 8) there will be Registration desk. There will be two people there expecting you to fill the form asking about your name, date of birth, number of the passport, home adress and the length of the stay (try to be sure about the dates). Then they will give you the info package and show you to your rooms.
The regsitration desk will be open on Saturday 22nd from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Sunday 23th the desk will be open from 9 a.m. till about a midnight.During the late night/early morning times the local porter will give you the form and the keys of the room, so there should be no problem.
For late arrivals we will open a registration desk in the dorms also Monday in the morning (7 to 8.30)and evening (18.30-20.00). Later on the stuff will be done during the administration hours at school (daily between 12.30-13.30).

1.3. ROOMS in the dorms
We have reserved several floors (higher floors) in the building for us only. The teachers will have a separate floor. The student rooms are grouped in "cells" consisting of 3 rooms. One is a double room, two are for three people. Unless three of you agree on sharing from the beginning, we will start putting only two people to the triple rooms. In case of need, however, we will add the third person.
If you want to share the room with somebody, tell it to the people at the register desk. Those who want to have a single room must pay for both beds (i.e. 150 Kc for the room) but this is not guaranteed because in case of need we will have to occupy also the other bed. As for the sex of the room sharers, there is no requirement, so mixed couples are OK, if they want to stay together. Otherwise we will try to put only boys or only girls in one cell.
Each cell has a bathroom with a shower. There is a kitchenette on each floor which provides a stove and a some pot to boil water. Some may have a microwave. There's no cutlery or plates or cups, bring your own.

1.4. PAYING for the accomodation
During the first week of the summer school, about Thursday (a day before the payment day, we will announce the time and place on some info board) people are expected to pay for their rooms in Czech cash.
The price has finally been negotiated to 80 Kc per night. Prepare the money, try to have the change, we will collect the money at school.
Those who received the grant for accomodation do not have to care about payments, we will take care of them (apart from the extra nights above the 13 nights paid by the school, those have to be paid for extra in cash).

1.5. Info package
We will give you a timetable, some maps, some other stuff. There will also be an INFO BOARD in the groundfloor of the dorm and a similar board at the university.

1.6. Teachers' accomodation
In the same building with students, on the ground floor. You should have a room for yourself (am I right Michal?), unless you agree on sharing. All the rest should be the same as with the students, just do not forget to mention that you are a teacher at the registration. In case of need call me at +420 777 552 123 (Lida).

1.7. A guided tour on Sunday
For those who arrive early enough and are interested we will organise a guided tour. Some English speaking person will show you to university and to the center of the town. The assumed departure is from the entrance of the hostel at 4 p.m. Sunday 7/23.

2. About Travel

2.1. When is the best time to arrive and to leave?
The recommended date of arrival is Sunday 23 July and the recommended date of departure is Saturday 5 August. But the dorm will open to us already on Saturday 22 July. Since Saturday there will be somebody there to welcome and register you (plus give you some info package) at times that will are publicized above (see 1.2). If you absolutely must arrive outside of the regular times, please send an email to lidave@email.cz so that we can arrange your arrival.

2.2. If I'm going to arrive late at night, when, where and whom should I contact?
Since Saturday July 22 there will be somebody in the dorm main entrance hall (KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8) to welcome and register you (plus give you some info package) at times that will are publicized above (see 1.2). But the dormitory is going to be open all the time and the taxis are in front of the railway station all the time, too. If your arrival is between midnight and 5 a.m., please, let us know in advance about the exact time of your arrival so that we can make sure all is OK. Perhaps we could even send somebody to meet you at the railway station. In such a case, please contact lidave@email.cz.

2.3. Do I need a visa?
Those of you who live in countries outside EU might need a visa. If you are not sure check with your local Czech embassy for the visa requirements. If you contact us, we can send you a letter confirming your participation if necessary. Send such a request to lidave@email.cz with your NAME, DATE of birth, and the ADDRESS you want the letter to be sent to.

2.4. What is the nearest airport?
The closest convenient airport is in Prague. In Prague, it takes about 1.5-2 hours from the airport to the main railway station ('Wilsonovo hlavni nadrazi') by bus and then subway (get a ticket at the airport - ca. 25 CZK), or about 1 hour by taxi. (Prague taxi drivers are infamous for trying to charge foreigners more - the trip should cost between 300 and 500 CZK. Ask about price before setting off.) It takes about 3.5 hours by train to get from Prague to Olomouc. Other options include:
- Vienna. Actually closer than Prague, but it is not so easy to get to Olomouc from there.
- Bratislava - there's a cheap airline (skyeurope.com) flying there from a lot of places in Europe, and the train connection to Olomouc is reasonable.
There are also small airports in Brno and Ostrava, which are closer than Prague, but not many international airlines fly there (Ryanair goes to Brno, see ryanair.com). It takes about hour and half to get to Olomouc from Brno or Ostrava, there are many buses and trains. For time tables on the net see below.

2.5. How do I get from Prague/Brno/Ostrava/Bratislava/Vienna to Olomouc?
There are a lot of trains/buses to Olomouc. Best it is from Prague. You can arrive any time (some gap around midnight, only). Brno is very easy untill 19.30, then there is no connection untill early in the morning. Ostrava is similar. Bratislava and Vienna are the worst (international connections - be ready for the check up on the border), but both can be done. Ask in some info office. You can try to check train/bus connections to Olomouc online on the Czech web
http://jizdnirady.atlas.cz/JRCis.asp?tt=c&cl=E5

2.6. How do I get from the Olomouc train station to the dorm?
Walk out of the railway station. On your left, you'll see the tram stop "Hlavni nadrazi". Buy an 8CZK tram ticket at the newsstand or from the yellow vending machine at the stop. (You can also ask the tram driver to sell you one for 12 CZK, they will however only accept change and they are very unlikely to speak English...) You can take the tram no. 2, or 4, or 6 to "Zizkovo namesti" (which is the second stop from where you are: "Hlavni nadrazi" >> "U Bystricky" >> "Zizkovo namesti"). Then walk to the dorm following the red line on this map The place you want to get to is "KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8" and it is just a bit above the point of the red arrow. We will sign the way by "EGG 2006"

From the train station, you can also take the tram no. 1, or 5, or 7 to "Envelopa" (again, the 2nd stop from where you are: "Hlavni nadrazi" >> "Vejdovskeho" >> "Envelopa"). Then walk to the dorm following this map.The place you want to get to is "KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8" and it is just a bit above the point of the red arrow. We will sign the way by "EGG 2006".

You could also take a taxi: there is a taxi stand in front of the railway station and you can usually find a taxi near the bus station as well. If you want to make prior arrangements (not necessary) here are the phone numbers of some Olomouc taxi services: (+420) 800 223 030 (free of charge), (+420) 800 113 030 (free of charge), (+420) 605 265 079. The place you want to get to is "KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8". The price of the ride should range between 70 and 120 CZK (2.5 - 4.2 EUR).

2.7. How do I get from the Olomouc bus station to the dorm?
Once you get off the bus, take the underground passage below the main road and you'll see the tram stop "Autobusove nadrazi podchod". The direction you want to go is across the track. Buy an 8CZK tram ticket at a newsstand or from the yellow vending machine at the stop. (You can also ask the tram driver to sell you one for 12 CZK, they will however only accept change and they are very unlikely to speak English...)

You can either take tram number 5, in that case get off at the 3rd stop from where you are, the "Envelopa" station ("Autobusove nadrazi podchod" >> "Hlavni nadrazi" >> "Vejdovskeho" >> "Envelopa"). Then walk to the dorm following the red arrow on this map. The place you want to get to is "KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8".

Or you can take tram number 4, in that case get off at "Zizkovo namesti" (which is the 3rd stop again: "Autobusove nadrazi podchod" >> "Hlavni nadrazi" >> "U Bystricky" >> "Zizkovo namesti"). Then walk to the dorm following the red arrow on this map.The place you want to get to is "KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8".

You can of course also take a taxi, see the answer to question 1.6 about how to get from the train station to the dorm.

3.1. What kind of place are we staying in? What is the address?
A student hostel of the Olomouc university. The address is KOLEJE BEDRICHA VACLAVKA, SMERALOVA 8. The accomodation is in so-called 'module appartments' with two double rooms (or one 2-bed room + one 3-bed room) with a bathroom. There is a kitchen on each floor. Communal facilities include a TV room, two study rooms, and a launderette.
Bed sheets, towels, and soap are provided.

The price for accomodation is CZK 80,-- per night.

3.3. How do I get from the hostel to the classrooms?
Follow the blue arrow on this map and you'll be there in about 5-10 minutes.

3.4. Do I need to do anything in order to book my hostel room?
If you are correctly registered, no. People who are registered and requested a space in the hostel, automatically have rooms allocated in the student-hostel where we all stay.

3.5. Does the hostel include meals? Are any meals provided?
No, meals are your own responsibility. (The hostel is a bare-bone no-comfort student-dorm, and does not provide things like meals.)
There is a kitchen on each floor in the dorms so you could do your own cooking in principle. There are fridges and electric kettles in the rooms, as well as glasses and plastic (disposable) teaspoons and plates. You may want to supply your own pots and cutlery if you want to cook in the dormitory, though.

3.6. Can I bring my wife? children? mom? pet?
No. We cannot provide space for people other than the participants.

3.7. Can I choose my roommates?
Yes, if you organize with them beforehand - though we encourage you to stay with complete strangers and make new friends that way. You can mention your preferences after your arrival (during the registration).

3.8. Is there enough room for all of us?
Yes, of course.

4. About the registration

4.1. What happens if I submit my registration form several times?
Only the last one will be counted.
(If you submit them with different names, then they will all be counted and you will receive the shame-of-the-egg punishment for giving additional work to organisers.)

4.2. If I register, can I later decide to withdraw my registration?
Yes, of course!! Just send a msg to egg-withdraw@auf.net and you will be automatically removed from the list of participants. We do request though that you tell us before June 20th.

4.3. What is this stuff about a mailing list?
When you register, you are automatically subscribed to a mailing list for annoucements about the school and for general discussion. (Notice that you must remain on that mailing list as long as you are registered with the school, we need a way to reach you!!)

5. Grants

5.1. Are grants really only for Central/Eastern Europe?
Yes. See the blurb on the purpose of the school for a brief explanation of why this is. It would be great if we could give out more money, but we're on a shoestring budget and it's already difficult like this...

5.2. What about people from Central/Eastern Europe living abroad?
That's to be seen on a case by case basis. But in general preference is given to those living out of reach of all these nice euros/dollars ;-)

5.3. Is it true that grants are given only to people who stay for the whole school?
Yes!! And we are pretty strict on this (see the following question).

5.4. I have a travel grant, how does reimbursement proceed?
You are expected to pay your travel, and then be reimbursed during the school. The reimbursement will be at the end of the school. We will be pretty strict on this, as there has been some abuse in the past.

6. About the classes

6.1. Are all classes in English?
Yes.

6.2. Am I supposed to attend all the classes?
No way!! This school is supposed to be benefit you, not stuff too much down your throat!! So attend as much as you can digest, and only the parts you are really interested in.

6.3. When will the schedule be known?
Scheduling is a long and difficult process, wish us luck! Some preliminary timetable is at http://egg.auf.net/docs/v3timetable.htm

First make sure that the answer to your question is not on this website!! If it's not, then you have two options:
