Brno 07 FAQ

1. About Travel

1.1. Do I need a visa?
Those of you who live in countries outside EU might need a visa. If you are not sure check with your local Czech embassy for the visa requirements. If you contact us, we can send you a letter confirming your participation if necessary. Send such a request to docekal@phil.muni.cz with your NAME, DATE of birth, PASSPORT number and the ADDRESS you want the letter to be sent to.

1.2. What is the nearest airport?
Larger international airports worth flying to are: Praha (Ruzyne), Vienna, Bratislava. For directions see "How do I get to Brno from Praha/Vienna/Bratislava?
The nearest airport is in Brno. http://www.airport-brno.cz/index.php?lang=en The airport is rather local, though Ryanair has direct flights from Brno to London. Directions from the airport, quoting their web-page (in fact, these are directions TO the airport, but mutatis mutandis, the procedure is the same):
"To the Airport Brno you can get very simply from the very centre of the City of Brno. You can use the direct bus line No.76. It departs from the Brno Main train station from 04:30 to 23:00 every half an hour. After arrival and before departure of the Ryanair.com plane to London the bus goes every 20 minutes."

1.3. To Brno from Praha/Vienna/Bratislava
From Prague: Buses leave from the main coach station Florenc. The buses are operated by Student Agency. Buy tickets at the terminal, not on the bus. Ticket costs cca 150 CZK. The buses go from 6 in the morning till 9 in the evening, and leave roughly every (half an) hour. The company also provides a connection between the Prague airport and Florenc in a rather smallish shuttle. Find Student Agency counter in the arrival hall at the airport and buy your ticket there. Last shuttle that connects to a bus to Brno leaves the airport at 19:50.
You can also take a train. Train schedule: http://www.idos.cz/JRCis.asp?tt=c&cl=E5
From Vienna: there are regular buses from the airport directly to Brno at 08:05, 11:05, 18:05 and 20:30. Ticket cost cca 300 CZK. The buses also leave from Wien, Nord-Praterstern. Schedule: http://www.studentagency.cz/mainpage.php?switch=101537
From Bratislava: The most convenient connection seems to be train. Check the schedule at http://www.idos.cz/JRCis.asp?tt=c&cl=E5.

1.4. How do I get from the Brno train station to the dorm?
Walk out of the railway station. Before the station, you'll see the tram stop "Hlavni nadrazi". Buy an 13CZK tram ticket at the newsstand or from the yellow vending machine at the stop. (You can also ask the tram driver to sell you one for 15 CZK, they will however only accept change and they are very unlikely to speak English...) You can take the tram no. 1 to "Lipova" (which is the seventh stop from where you are: "Hlavni nadrazi >> Nove sady >> Hybesova >> Vaclavska >> Mendlovo namesti >> Vystaviste >> Vinarska >> Lipova"). Then walk to the dorm following the red line on this map. The place you want to get to is "Koleje Vinarska, Vinarska 5" and it is just a bit below the upper end point of the red line. We will sign the way by "EGG 2007".

You could also take a taxi: there is a taxi stand in front of the railway station and you can usually find a taxi near the bus station as well. The place you want to get to is "Koleje Vinarska, Vinarska 5". The price of the ride should be less than 200 CZK (7.5 EUR).

1.5. How do I get from the Brno bus station to the dorm?
Once you get off the bus, take the pedestrian bridge above the main road. There are two bridges, take the one on the right side (see the map). Cross the bridge and you'll see the tram stop "Zvonarka". The direction you want to go is across the track. Buy an 13CZK tram ticket at a newsstand or from the yellow vending machine at the stop. (You can also ask the tram driver to sell you one for 15 CZK, they will however only accept change and they are very unlikely to speak English...)

You can take tram number 9 and get off at the 2nd stop from where you are, the "Hlavni nadrazi" station (Zvonarka >> Uzka >> Hlavni nadrazi). There you must change to another tram. You can take the tram no. 1 to "Lipova" (which is the seventh stop from where you are: "Hlavni nadrazi >> Nove sady >> Hybesova >> Vaclavska >> Mendlovo namesti >> Vystaviste >> Vinarska >> Lipova"). Then walk to the dorm following the red line on this this map. The place you want to get to is "Koleje Vinarska, Vinarska 5" and it is just a bit below the upper end point of the red line. We will sign the way by "EGG 2007".

You can of course also take a taxi, see the answer to question 1.4 about how to get from the train station to the dorm.

2. About the hostel

2.1. What kind of place are we staying in? What is the address?
The rooms are two-bed rooms with toilet and shower in the room. All are very nice and half of the rooms are renovated, now offering near-Western standards. The address of the hotel is THE GARNI HOTEL VINAŘSKÁ, Vinařská 5 (603 00 Brno). Every double bedroom includes a fridge, a small kitchen with a cooker and sanitary facilities. The towels and sheeting are provided. But there are no dishes in the kitchens. See http://www.skm.muni.cz/ubytovani.php?akce=39&lang=en for more info.

2.2. Can I bring my wife? children? mom? pet?
No. We cannot provide space for people other than the participants.

2.3. Can I choose my roommates?
Yes, if you organize with them beforehand. You can mention your preferences after your arrival (during the registration).

2.4. Where can I do my laundry during the school?
You can do your laundry during the school for 35 CZK (= 1,25 EUR). There are washing machines in the hotel.

3. About the registration

3.1. What happens if I submit my registration form several times?
Only the last one will be counted.
(If you submit them with different names, then they will all be counted and you will receive the shame-of-the-egg punishment for giving additional work to organisers.)

3.2. If I register, can I later decide to withdraw my registration?
Yes, of course!! Just send a msg to egg-withdraw@auf.net and you will be automatically removed from the list of participants. We do request though that you tell us before June 20th.

3.3. What is this stuff about a mailing list?
When you register, you are automatically subscribed to a mailing list for annoucements about the school and for general discussion. (Notice that you must remain on that mailing list as long as you are registered with the school, we need a way to reach you!!)

4. Grants

4.1. Are grants really only for Central/Eastern Europe?
Yes. See the blurb on the purpose of the school for a brief explanation of why this is. It would be great if we could give out more money, but we're on a shoestring budget and it's already difficult like this...

4.2. What about people from Central/Eastern Europe living abroad?
That's to be seen on a case by case basis. But in general preference is given to those living out of reach of all these nice euros/dollars ;-)

4.3. Is it true that grants are given only to people who stay for the whole school?
Yes!! And we are pretty strict on this (see the following question).

4.4. I have a travel grant, how does reimbursement proceed?
You are expected to pay your travel, and then be reimbursed during the school. The reimbursement will be at the end of the school. We will be pretty strict on this, as there has been some abuse in the past.

5. About the classes

5.1. Are all classes in English?
Yes.

5.2. Am I supposed to attend all the classes?
No way!! This school is supposed to be benefit you, not stuff too much down your throat!! So attend as much as you can digest, and only the parts you are really interested in.

5.3. When will the schedule be known?
Scheduling is a long and difficult process, wish us luck! Some preliminary timetable is at http://egg.auf.net/docs/v3timetable.htm

6. Money issues

6.1. Should I bring all my money in cash?
Not necessarily, you can also use traveler's checks (at some banks) or your credit card. In most shops, especially bigger ones, and at most restaurants you can pay with credit or debit cards. ATMs are frequent in the city center, as well as banks. Generally, as far as exchanging money, using credit cards etc. is concerned, Czechlands don't differ from other EU countries.

7. Misc

7.1. Will there be an internet connection available?
Apparently we will roll in luxury this year, with an internet connection in every bedroom...

7.2. Where can I find maps of the areas near the dorm, the school, and the railway station?
Your welcome package will include a map of the dorm (online version) and of the dorm's vicinity (online version). To see a map of Brno online, go e.g. here. There is a zoom slider for a closer look... If you type "Brno, Vinarska" to the search box on the top, it will show you the dorm.

7.3. Who should I contact if I have more questions?
First make sure that the answer to your question is not on this website!! If it's not, then you have two options:
- either you feel your question is of general interest, in which case you should send an email to the entire mailing list (where every registered person will receive it)
- or you feel it is a private issue that would not interest all the participants to the school, in which case you should contact the organisers directly, at: summerschool at auf.net
