||As an undergraduate who is just about to finish the first year, I still have rather broad interests with regard to the field that I want to be specializing in. On the other hand, I am absolutely sure that my chief interest is the languages of South-East Asia, in particular Burmese and its relatives, as well as Thai, Lao, Khmer, Indonesian and other languages of the area (but having no opportunity to study them formally, I have meanwhile had already a year of Hindi instruction). I have been present at severla conferences both inside and outside Russia.
I have a very clear understanding that generative linguistics is the main brand of linguistics today, and ignoring it almost amounts to leaving oneself outside the linguistics community. On the other hand, at my university much of the training is done outside this tradition or with little attention to it, which is why EGG is a great opportunity to get a real introduction to linguistics beside what I have received at unversity. Not to mention it would make a great holiday.
