When derive should we _ the order without remnant

Melanie Jouitteau

I investigate a special type of movement, late last-resort expletive
movement. This movement triggers, among others, fronting of non-tensed
verbal heads stranding their objects (*Given have I straw to the
rabbit*, *Read does Myriam her article in the garden*) in some V2
languages, which makes it look at the very first superficial look - like a
good candidate for remnant movement.

I will first show that remnant movement is not a suitable mechanism for
these structures, and present the basic syntactic properties of this
movement, with data from Breton (so-called 'Long Head Movement' paradigm)
and Icelandic (so-called 'Stylistic Fronting' paradigm).

The class develops an inquiry into the interface between syntax and the
sensorimotor system via morphology. How late in the derivation can movement
take place? Can movement serve as a repair strategy to meet the needs of the
interfaces? Can the post-spellout morpho(phono)logy handle word order
rearrangements?

We will conclude with multimodal expletive gesture insertion in a dialect of
French, opening on a discussion on the multimodality of PF.
