Reciprocals

We'll go through the main proposals in the literature on reciprocal expressions like 'each other' in English and other languages, beginning with Dougherty's (1970) transformational treatment of 'each other,' ending with Sabato and Winter's (2005) analysis of it as a polyadic quantifier, and the elaboration of that analysis in Dotlacil and Nilsen (in prep.). The main topics covered will be:

-different readings of reciprocals

-internal composition of reciprocals, from a cross-linguistic perspective

-locality of reciprocals: relation to reflexives; long distance reciprocals
