Remnants of Clause Structure

The course takes the remnant movement analysis of verb second and related phenomena proposed by Nilsen (2003) as a starting point and investigates what modifications can or must be made to it in light of the subsequent literature. In particular, my old analysis will be confronted with:

-Biberauer and Robert's (2004) critique of Müller's (2004) account of V2 which is similar to mine in some respects;

-Lechner's (2005, 2007) objections to remnant movement analyses of verb movement in general;

-The Scandinavian data discussed by Bentzen (2005-7) and Bentzen et al. (2007)/ Wiklund et al. (2007).
