Modals, imperatives and polarity items (2 weeks)

This course will be about the interaction and, in particular, the scopal relations between negative elements and (deontic) modality and imperatives. First, we will provide a general overview of current issues in the study to negation and polarity; after that we will introduce the central notions in the domains of modality and imperatives. The final classes concern first the intricate relation between negation and imperative (why is it that in many languages imperatives cannot be negated?) and second, what determines the scopal relations between negation and (deontic) modals (why has English mustn’t for instance a reverse reading than German muss nicht?).
