1st Central European Summer School in Generative Syntax

Olomouc 1994

Points for a future organisation

Any putative future Central European Summer School in Generative Syntax will have the same overall goals: to create an inexpensive and collaborative school, by means of having it organised by young volunteer teachers in a small and inexpensive Eastern town.

Certain problems however will force us to change the organisation. The school was organised in their "spare time" by researchers who have their own teaching and research commitments in their home universities. The organisers severly underestimated the workload involved in the organisation of the school, and this led to inefficiency at many points. The scheduling of diverse organisational events suffered greatly. Many grant deadlines were missed, the application deadlines were too tight, and some visa problems could not be solved. It was for instance a sad result that none of the Albanian applicants were able to receive a visa, although several of them had been offered reimbursement of their expenses.

Since in our experience the teachers cannot sustain both the full charge of teaching and research on the one hand, and of organisation of the school on the other, we would need to be helped for the organisation of any future summer school. In accordance with the aim of keeping costs at a minimum, this would be done by a student subsequently interested in attending the school.
