Acquisition of aspect
Natalia Gagarina
The proposed course has two goals. The first is to give trainees a theoretical overview of some general processes and principles of first language acquisition. The second is to introduce several different ways that languages express aspectual oppositions, with particular focus on English (and other Germanic languages) as opposed to Slavic. The course will introduce the ‘aspect before tense’ hypothesis in first language acquisition, with particular focus on English and will provide the insight into the competitive hypothesis.
