Introduction to Optimality Theory - part 1

Peter Jurgec

This course is a hands-on introduction to Optimality Theory in phonology. The first half of the course focuses on the basic elements of the theory (the model, markedness, correspondence theory, constraints, tableaux). These are illustrated with a few simple phonological examples. The second half of the course looks into the main predictions of constraint interaction (factorial typology, homogeneity of target/heterogeneity of process, the emergence of the unmarked).
