Stress from a typological perspective
Anthi Revithiadou
This course aims at introducing the basic concepts of metrical theory (e.g. foot typology, extrametricality, catalexis, etc.) and also discussing some ground-breaking theoretical developments in the area of stress and stress-related phenomena, with special focus on the typology of stress systems. The cross-linguistic typology will give us the opportunity to examine a wide array of empirical data from various theoretical perspectives. We will begin with an overview of previous (mainly parametric) approaches to stress, and then continue to discuss the relevant Optimality Theoretic literature in this area. Emphasis will be on the typological consequences of the proposed analyses and the development of novel ones in class. The course will be rounded off with a short discussion of issues pertaining to the acquisition of stress from an OT perspective. Students will be handed in problem sets at the end of each class-session and will be expected to actively participate in class.
Materials for this class will be posted at here.
