Introduction to Syntax / II

Sandhya Sundaresan

This class will pick up from where Michal's left off. One of the main goals of this class will be to help you to think syntactically -- i.e. to analyze a piece of linguistic data for its structural properties. We will see: 1. What it actually means to think syntactically in this manner, and 2. what the internal and external limitations to this are. We will examine a number of syntactic phenomena with this goal in mind. The class will be primarily interactive: we will also try as much as possible to avoid technical terms and work our way up from first principles.
