self-descriptionMadam, Sir, I am student of English language and literature at the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and I would like to apply for EGG summer school in generative grammar. I am last year of undergraduate studies of French language and literature as well and as part of my studies I also have classes of Spanish, so what I like the most about languages are those patterns that you can apply on almost every language. For my bachelor thesis, I am working on Body Idioms and I am researching Corpus and regularities and irregularities in translations into Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. I think those courses of syntax, phonetics, phonology, semantics etc. might be very helpful in my MA studies I will apply for in September. Frankly, when I enrolled in English Department I did not have slightest idea that I would make trees out of sentences, as we do it in syntax. In my fifth semester I had two courses dealing with syntax: Syntax of Simple Sentence and Chomsky for beginners. I became very much interested in both subjects, especially that part of Generative syntax dealing with different rules and drawing trees for word group structure as well as for more complex trees for sentence (simple and complex) structure, which we still have in course Syntax of Complex Sentence. I heard for this summer school from my linguistics professor Nedžad Leko, PhD, who encouraged us to apply because we all have an equal chance to attend these courses, which is another very important thing for me, as for many Bosnian students. Many other linguistics courses are very expensive and we usually cannot afford it, but the fact that you give scholarships is very positive thing. My main goals are to learn as much as possible, but also to be part of the summer school where you have different approach. If I understood it well, the point of the school you are organizing is to meet so many different people, to meet teachers who will have different style, so it won’t look like the formal school we are used to, but something more fun. Sincerely, the idea is amazing! It reminded me why I chose the study of language in the first place and it encouraged me to talk to people how interesting and cool study of language is. I would really like to be part of this wonderful project! Sincerely, Ivana Bilić
