I am an undergraduate student entering my final year of study at Concordia University. As an honours student in linguistics I have actively participated in a number of extra-curricular activities by attending open lectures both at Concordia and other local institutions, presenting independent research at the student Colloquia held on campus in March, organizing the weekly Reading Group, and hosting and attending workshops. Although my participation in the department's student organization this year has been informal, I have been elected head of academics for next year and look forward to the opportunity to continue to contribute to the department's lively and enthusiastic atmosphere by initiating an online journal to publish peer reviewed theses and research at the undergraduate level as well as inviting guest lecturers to address the department and continuing to organize workshops and the reading group for linguistic students.
For the first part of this summer I have been asked to work as a research assistant to our department's semanticist, and will be taking a reading course focusing on issues of formalism in semantics until late June. After completing my BA next spring I plan to pursue formal semantics and the semantics/syntax interface at the graduate level. In preparation for graduate study I hope to continue to broaden and deepen my understanding of linguistics by attending the Egg summer school where I would be grateful for this unique opportunity to study under a number of different professors from various departments, thus becoming more familiar with a variety of specializations and approaches taken in the field. |
