I'll be graduating with a B.A. in Linguistics from NYU this month, and I plan to take a year off before applying for a graduate level program. As an undergrad, I completed a senior project on the acoustics of Arabic emphatics and non-native perception of their phonemic distinction from "plain" sounds. This means that I have the most experience with phonetics and current models of speech perception, i.e. direct realism, motor theory, and general auditory theory. Otherwise, despite my expected degree, I consider myself at a fairly introductory level in all other areas of linguistics. I would like to attend egg in order to further familiarize myself with different aspects of the field and to get a better idea of what topics I might focus on in my future studies. It seems to me that egg offers a great opportunity to meet international linguistics currently doing research, from whom I might learn about the current state of the field and where it's going. I am especially interested in the introductory and topical lectures on Arabic morphology and structure, since I've studied Arabic as a second language. The other egg classes I am especially interested in are those pertaining to language acquisition. As an enthusiastic student of foreign languages, I am always curious about the processes of speech perception and production that affect my own and others' abilities to acquire new languages. |
