I currently work in Martin Hackl’s lab at Pomona College in California, U.S.A. I have taken introductory level courses in linguistics and cognitive science, as well as a research intensive class: Psycholinguistics. I have also taken a Semantics course. Working in the lab has afforded me a dynamic research environment, where I get practical experience in experimental design and the raw machinations of the experimental process.
I am very interested in the interface between semantics and syntax. I find Martin Hackl’s work with quantifiers very elegant in extricating this nontrivial link. One of his studies (with Jorie Koster-Moeller and Jason Varvoutis) provided real time sentence processing evidence for an intrinsic link between the processes resolving antecedent contained deletion and the processes resolving the problem of quantifiers in object position. Needless to say, I find covert movement a highly intriguing approach to explaining some processing phenomena in syntax, as well as semantics.
I would also assign myself to the generative grammar camp as I enjoy exploring how certain linguistic phenomena relate to overarching themes of natural language. Thus, I would be extremely grateful to have the opportunity to attend EGG this year, because, although my school offers a research intensive and diverse linguistics curriculum, I would like to have access to a greater range of resources, both academically and technologically, as well as be able to take highly specialized courses in area in which I am interested. |
