self-descriptionI'm a final year Masters student, and my thesis is a cross-linguistic study of agreement with preverbal coordinated DPs in Bantu. In general my interests are syntax centered, although I also enjoy phonology. For as long as I can remember I've enjoyed learning different languages, and trying to work out their rules, and I'd say that is why I'm drawn to generative linguistics - it's all about working out the mechanics of language (I describe it to my family as taking apart the engine of a language, putting it back together again, and then trying to work out where the spare nuts and bolts came from). The main reason I'd like to go to the egg is this: I'm doing an MA by full thesis, which means that for two years I've had no course work; my reading has become narrowly centered on issues which are related to my dissertation, and I'm starting to feel like I've lost track of what's happening outside of this area of linguistics. This is particularly problematic, as I'm "shopping around" for a PhD topic, but without a broader knowledge base I feel that I'm constrained by my current research area. I therefore hope that the egg would expose me to new ideas, which might then inspire me.
