self-descriptionDuring my BA and MA programme at Utrecht University, I took courses in several fields of linguistics. In my MA thesis I focused on the interaction between syntax and semantics, by studying the syntactic properties of weakly referential phrases. Now I'm a PhD-student, I continue working on (morpho)syntactic and semantic properties in noun phrases. I study different types of possession (alienable and inalienable) and how they are morphosyntactically realized in closely related languages (dialects of Dutch and languages closely related to Dutch). I think there is a lot of fascinating variation in noun phrases. Studying this variation will shed light on the principles that underlie human language. That's why I love my study. I really like the systematic nature of language and I love to study its structures in order to get a grasp of this fascinating cognitive system. I would really like to expand my knowledge in generative syntax. I learned a lot about linguistics during my MA programme, but there is still so much more to explore. Besides that, I feel that have to catch up with some contemporary linguistic theories, because I had a non-academic job for two years after graduating from my MA. I'm sure that the EGG will perfectly meet this need.
